Equestrian Law

Equestrian Law, also referred to as Equine Law, is law that relates to horses and riders.  It covers a number of issues including contracts for buying and selling horses, boarding, breeding, leasing, training and transportation.  It also includes litigation for cases of misrepresentation, breaches of contract, and injuries to horses and riders.

Additionally, there are related issues that may require legal assistance including buying and leasing of farm and stable properties, zoning and municipal ordinance matters, and resolving environmental problems that may result from improper handling and disposition of animal wastes.  Improper farm waste management may lead to significant fines and penalties as well as possible liability to neighboring property owners.

The Horseracing Industry is growing in Central Pennsylvania, and there are more people and businesses working in horse-related activities.  We advise clients about employment contracts, workers compensation, business formation and management, and asset protection.  Our Medical Practices Group can provide important services to veterinary practices and personnel, including hiring of professional staff, buying and selling of practices and business succession.

Horse Shows are popular in our area, ranging from the informal “fun” shows at riding clubs to the very structured, sanctioned events that are part of national competitions.  Contracts for the competitors, the judges, the ring stewards, the announcer and sometimes food and other vendors should be prepared or at least reviewed by an attorney.

In 2006, Pennsylvania enacted the Equine Activity Act that provides limited immunity from liability for those involved with horses, but there are many other steps that should be taken to minimize risk of loss in the event of accident or injury.  Our firm also represents persons who have been injured as a result of horse-related accidents.

Our attorneys who work with Equestrian Law are familiar with horses and riding and showing them.  We are prepared to offer advice and assistance to our equestrian clients.
